Proms in the Park has become a popular annual event at Auckland Castle.
July 2009 sees an exciting new development to the annual Proms in the Park event at Auckland Castle.
The event organisers are building on the success of the well-supported classical music event, and will be running a three day music-based programme over the weekend of Friday 17th to Sunday 19th of July. The events on offer are designed to appeal to all the family and a wide range of tastes in music.
This year, councillors Neil Harrison and Rob Yorke, staff from Durham County Council and representatives from Bishop Auckland Town Council, as well as the Town Centre Forum, have been working together to plan the event.
‘The Big Bish Bash’ is the umbrella title for the programme of events over the weekend.
Organisers have partnered themselves with Durham International Brass Festival organisers to bring acts from overseas, including two bands from the USA; The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and The Hot 8 Brass Band, who will be performing on the Sunday.
The Proms in the Park will be held on Friday, July 17th, from 7.30pm at Auckland Castle, tickets cost £12 or £8 concessions. A family ticket is £25 for 2 adults and 2 children.
On Saturday, July 18th, ‘Bishop Streets of Brass’ will take place in Bishop Auckland town centre from 11.00am. There will be free street entertainment in and around the town centre, which will feature a number of national and international street bands.
Sunday, July 19th, sees ‘The Big Bish Bash’ take over Auckland Castle.
Organisers suggest revellers bring a picnic and enjoy the ‘wonderful setting’ and some ‘fantastic summer sounds.’ There will be a wide range of activities for young people and children, refreshment outlets, storytellers and performances by local ensembles and youth bands. It begins at 4.00pm, doors open at 3.30pm, and tickets costs £5 each, children under 12 go free.
As the Friday and Sunday events are outdoors, organisers recommend that those attending wear suitable clothing and suggest they bring a seat or blanket and a picnic if required. Early booking is advisable as previous Proms concerts have sold out.
Tickets for Proms and The Big Bish Bash are available from Bishop Auckland Town Hall on 01388 602610.
