Bishop Auckland took on Esh Winning in the league on Saturday, December 5th.
The game started in explosive fashion when an Esh player, Lamb, thundered into a dangerous tackle on Bishop’s Joe Grant and was lucky to only be shown yellow.
Bishop took the lead with 14 minutes gone. Salvin played in a wonderful cross from the left, which Strong headed in powerfully at the back post.
With five minutes of the first half remaining, Bishop thought they had a penalty when the referee blew for a hand ball. However, the referee’s assistant indicated that the ball had gone out of play before the hand ball and a corner was given. At half time the score remained 1-0 to Bishop.
Chances fell to both sides before, on 63 minutes, Tyrone Masters was hacked from behind. Masters tried to stay on his feet but the stumble allowed Esh to gather the ball and clear, what could and should have been a penalty was not given
With ten minutes left to play, an Esh substitute headed home, unchallenged, from 6 yards out. The seconds ticked away with neither side able to break the deadlock, then, with 90 minutes played, Emson’s low, driven corner was flicked on by Salvin. His glancing header deflected off a defender. After a goal-line scramble it was Lawson who eventually blasted the ball home from close range.
The game ended in farcical fashion when Esh substitute Gibson showed outstanding petulance. He picked up the corner flag and threw it like a javelin towards the entrance to the ground. The childish display, and the subsequent sending off by the referee, was greeted by laughter and ironic cheers and applause.
Bishop Auckland 2- 1 Esh Winning.
