Bishop Auckland Rugby Club Under 13s continued their good form with a convincing win over a Gateshead side who had beaten them earlier in the season.
In the absence of Alex Bielby and Lloyd Purser, James Pirie started at stand-off. The first score came early as Sam McIvor made a sharp break from a scrummage; good back row support saw Michael Dunn
take the ball on before releasing Anthony Young to score the try.
Pirie’s powerful running saw him close to scoring but he was held up short and Ben Hoggart was on hand to finish off the move; Tom Clarke kicked the conversion.
Gateshead fought back and a fine run saw them score a converted try.
A solo run from Young increased Bishop’s lead and Pirie finally scored the try he deserved, which was converted by McIvor. The half finished with Matthew Mitchell scoring a good try to make it 29 – 7 at
half time.
The Bishop scrummage was strong with Clarke, Sunny Maan, Chris Coates, and Curtis Hall all solid under pressure. In the backs, Macaulay Barker saved a number of tries with excellent tackles. Toby Oliver
also put in a fine tackle to save a try.
Owen Booth and Ben Oliver both made good runs. In the back row, Josh Leonard and Jonathan Clarey ran themselves into the ground to cover large areas of the pitch. Barker added a try with a long run around the defence. Matthew Borrowdale came close to scoring on a number of occasions but good tackling hauled him down.
Mitchell and Pirie both added second tries to their tally whilst Gateshead fought hard and added two more of their own. The final score was 44 – 17 to Bishop.
The Under 10s took on Mowden, but were up against it before the game had even begun. Only 10 players were available for selection against a full strength Mowden park. The team played aggressive, attacking Rugby.
The four forwards, Matthew Brunny, Cameron Kitchy, Stuey Sowerby and Rob Ather, took the game to Mowden.
Jordan Galloney and Harry Mac fed ball after ball out to the quite brilliant Matty Hanner, who sent the back line into over drive. Sam Hamo smashed up the middle of the park, feeding the flyers Jamie “the predator” Redfearn and “captain Marvel” Perry Houston stretching the Mowden defence to breaking point. Mowden never gave up scoring try for try with Bishop.
The last word went to Galloney after another marauding run from Hamo who sucked in the defence and popped the ball up for Galloney to dive over the line for the winning try.
