The Mayor of Bishop Auckland, David Wilson, was on hand recently to present J. J. Kickboxing with new Thai pads and gloves which were purchased through a donation of £500 from the Town Council’s Community Fund.
J. J. Kickboxing has been in existence for around 20 years in the Bishop area. It was previously held in the Four Clocks Centre in Newgate Street, but three years ago moved to Henknowle Community Centre.
The club has gone from strength to strength and has four current English and British Champions at various ages.
Ryan Fairish, 16, won the ISKA Junior League Championship recently, competing at 8 separate tournaments including Oldham, Manchester and Liverpool. He is the youngest and only winner in the North East.
Also, Tyrone McGowan, 11, competed at the same tournaments and won 7 trophies.
On May 8th, the club has 5 representatives competing in Oldham and on May 16th in Harrogate there are two juniors and three seniors in action.
On May 30th, Ryan Fairish, Adam Rickaby and Kay Thompson are at Leeds in a show called ‘No Mercy 3’.
The club has around 50 junior members and 50 senior members. New people are always welcome, so if you are interested in joining call John Rickaby on 07805559060 or go along to a session at Henknowle Community Centre in Cumbria Place, Bishop Auckland.
Their classes take place every Monday from 5.00pm to 6.00pm, Tuesday from 5.00pm to 6.00pm for juniors and 6.00pm to 7.15pm for seniors.
Wednesday bewteen 6.00pm and 7.15pm and Saturday mornings from 10.00am till 12 noon.
