The winning team from King James I Community Arts College
Young entrepreneurs are celebrating after scooping the top prize in an annual schools competition.
Pupils from King James I Community Arts College have been named as the winners of Durham County Council’s Future Business Magnates 2010.
The 12 Year 8 pupils beat off strong competition from 15 other secondary schools to claim the title for their successful business specialising in video travel guides.
The team were presented with their prizes by basketball star Fabulous ‘Fab’ Flournoy and Lady Elsie Robson, whose late husband, Sir Bobby, launched the fi rst Future Business Magnates challenge in 2005.
Newcastle Eagles player and coach Fab said, “It’s an honour to be invited to be a part of this programme and exciting to see young people who look set to be the business men and women of the future.
“The challenge is actually very similar to taking part in a sport – the young people are part of a team, all working towards a common goal but each with their own individual roles and ideas to help achieve it.”
Future Business Magnates is open to teams of between eight and 12 Year 8 pupils who compete against each other as they set up and run their own business.
With the help of a partner from a local business, teams take part in a series of six challenges from developing the initial business idea to setting a budget and creating a marketing campaign. The final challenge is a 20-minute presentation to a panel of judges at Ramside Hall Hotel, during which the teams are also grilled on the details of their business idea.
Prizes are awarded following each challenge and points gained towards the fi nal prize – £3,000 for the winning school and £100 for each team member.
This year, teams chose to design, produce and sell a wide variety of products including recycled stationery, military themed jewellery, personalised calendars and perfumed pillows and cushions.
The youngsters from King James I School scored a total of 893 points during the challenge with their business Sights and Sounds for the Streetwise Youth (SASSY).
