To meet the increased demand for female members, Bishop Auckland Boxing Club has received a £10,000 boost from the Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership.
Councillors June Lee and John Lethbridge have donated £10,000 to the project from their neighbourhood budgets.
The money will be used to pay for the installation of a female toilet, shower and changing rooms.
The grant will also enable the club to buy essential equipment for the increase in numbers and help to replace some old equipment.
The club, on Murphy Crescent, is open six days a week and offers a wide range of training and fitness activities for members aged 11 and over and often holds boxing events at the club in the Woodhouse area of the town.
The new equipment will enable the group to further develop the skills of the boxers and offer them better opportunities to take part in competitions at the highest level.
Bishop Auckland Town Council has also given £500 towards the project.
Peter Moody, who runs the club said, “We are thrilled to have received this funding. It will make an enormous difference to the future of our club.”
Cllr John Lethbridge said, “This project has a demonstrable impact on the young people it engages with.
“The club provides opportunities to build team building skills and discipline for both boys and girls on an equal and inclusive basis.”
Cllr June Lee said, “I would like to thank all of those who have been involved in the project, especially the boxing club staff and their family and friends and Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP team for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the project.
“The club is a credit to all those involved ranging from children and young people to adults, some of whom are champions from the various national competitions the club attends.
“I am very pleased to have been involved in this project.”
Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP is one of 14 set up by Durham County Council in 2009.
