A lucky Bishop Auckland resident has a double reason to celebrate after becoming the first winner in a scheme aimed at encouraging people to recycle.
Not only has Bernard Harrison, of Lambton Drive, done his bit towards reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, he’s also won a new tablet computer through the North East Recycling Rewards Scheme.
The scheme, which is entirely funded by central government and private company Valpak Ltd, was launched in December and is being run in five local authority areas in the North East.
Durham County Council is promoting the scheme in County Durham, which is specifically aimed at encouraging people to recycle glass jars and aerosols. Between now and July a further seven residents who are signed up to the scheme will receive rewards for their recycling efforts. As well as tablet computers the rewards also include games consoles, an MP3 player or a donation to a local community group.
Vicki Burrell, waste strategy team leader at Durham County Council, said, “We want to encourage County Durham residents to recycle as much of their waste as possible so that we can reduce the amount sent to landfill.
“This campaign, which is specifically aimed at reminding people to recycle their glass jars and aerosols, offers an excellent incentive for people do their bit.”
People can still sign up to take part in the campaign by visiting www.recycle-more.co.uk/nerewards or by calling 0844 844 4546.
Those who sign up will be sent stickers to put on their glass jars and aerosols before they are put in their normal kerbside recycling collection.
Each month between now and July a stickered item will be selected and the winning resident will receive a reward.
