St. Wilfrid’s RC Primary School in Bishop Auckland have their own allotment which is carefully maintained by local lad George Patterson, 72, who shows the youngsters basic gardening skills.
Last year George asked the staff at the school if he and the children could make a scarecrow for the Food Festival. George made the scarecrow frame and the children from Year 1 dressed him and gave him his name – ‘Bob.’
After the festival George took the scarecrow home because no one wanted him. That was until Bishop Auckland Town Hall came to the rescue, and Bob the Scarecrow has been in permanent residence in The McGuiness Gallery ever since.
Janet Strong, deputy centre manager said, “Everyone really likes having him here and he is a popular attraction for the youngsters”.
A while ago, a man whose first name was Bob used to visit the scarecrow regularly with his grand children. When he died the family held the reception in the McGuiness Gallery with Bob the Scarecrow in attendance.
Last week, George and pupils from St. Wilfrid’s School, now in Year 2 went along to the Town Hall to give Bob a makeover.
George is now working with the school on two new scarecrows, with youngsters aged 3-4 from the 1st Steps Nursery making one while Years 1 & 2 will make the other.
