Theatre Hooligans perform one-night only dance show

Over 300 people travelled to King James I Academy recently to see BATH’s (Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans) latest one-night-only Dance Show, Proximo Passo (The Next Step).

The show was organised as a fundraising event for BATH’s ‘Brazilliant’ project.

The uplifting show featured 19 original pieces performed by students in Years 7-14, with a hugely diverse selection of styles on offer including Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Jamaican and Comedic dance.

The show also incorporated a number of moving, issue-based group performances focusing on refugees and bullying, which were conceived by Stephen Elliott, Drama Teacher at the Academy and founder of BATH.

The Brazilliant International Project, which was launched at the Academy in 2015, brings together young people from different backgrounds and cultures through a variety of Dance and Drama projects.

Part of the project involves fundraising to allow young Brazilians to visit the community for two weeks in July, to share their life experiences and vibrant culture with local primary pupils.

As part of this ongoing project, seventeen King James I Academy students between the ages of 14 and 18 are currently in Brazil working with local school pupils in the towns of Navirai and Maringa.
