Under the auspices of Bishop Auckland Music Society, the Andreas Ensemble has in recent years regularly presented seasonal music for Advent and Christmas in St. Andrew’s, South Church and the annual Carol Singing for Everyone event.
Whilst this year is no exception, the installation of a new central heating system in St. Andrew’s means that the church cannot be used for several weeks.
So, this year, Bishop Auckland Methodist Church and St. Mary’s RC Church have most generously agreed to host these events.
On Friday 24th November, from 7.30pm, Bishop Auckland Methodist Church will host Bach for Choir & Organ as Advent begins.
The concert will include all of Bach’s Orgelbüchlein preludes for Advent, Christmas and the New Year, with the Andreas Ensemble singing each of the chorales (Lutheran hymns) and short polyphonic motets based on them.
Quite a few of these Lutheran hymn tunes have found their way into British hymnbooks and will therefore be recognised by the audience.
It is also perhaps good in this year, while we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, to enjoy how Luther adopted popular music of the time and pieces from the Roman tradition to foster a new enthusiasm for inclusive hymn singing by the whole congregation.
Then, on Friday 1st December, again from 7.30pm but this time in St. Mary’s RC Church, Vart Road, the annual Carol Singing for Everybody concert will be held.
Tickets are £7.50 and include interval refreshments. They are available from Brian Varley calling 01388 606075, or from Brothertons Music Shop at 205 Newgate Street.
Tickets will also be available at the door.
