Bishop Auckland St. Mary’s Juniors F.C. had a visit from and an England F.C. player on Saturday 21st April, when 22 year-old Owen Bainbridge came to training.

Owen plays for the England Football Blind Team and hopes to get chosen for Team GB Blind team for the Olympics this year.

He was playing regularly for the team but has been out with a knee injury. He is fit to play again, however, after having surgery.

Owen’s aunty, Jan Brunskill, is secretary of the Under 11s Angels team and Owen’s brother is hoping to start training with the U13 Kings team.

His father, Stuart Bainbridge, was a regular player in the Northern League for Evenwood, West Auckland, Spennymoor and Whitby.

Owen was born with partial sight but unfortunately became totally blind when he was 6 years-old.

Owen kindly donated a signed David Beckham shirt to the Under 11 Angels team, which he was given on a recent trip to Los Angeles with the Blind Team.

The club is hoping to raise funds by raffling the shirt off. Only 50 tickets are available at £10 each. To purchase one call Steve Coulthard on 07968 426 817.

Durham County Council’s Woodhouse Close Leisure Complex is inviting you to Swim a Song with your child this spring.

Designed to be an alternative, fun, innovative and effective programme, Swim a Song introduces adults with young children, aged from newborn to four years, to the world of aquatics, encouraging them to enjoy the water through music and movement.

The programme, which is fully supported and endorsed by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), will see your child work towards the successful completion and attainment of the Kellogg’s ASA Swim a Song awards.

Senior sports and physical activity development officer at Durham County Council, George Richardson, said: “This is a fun introduction to swimming and aquatics for very young children, encouraging them to become more confident and familiar with being in the water. Not only is it fun for the children, but it can also be enjoyed by the older members of the family too.”

Beginning on Wednesday, 16th May at 1pm, the two half-hour sessions will run until the summer holidays.

Each session will cost just £2.10 and those who complete the full block will receive a Swim a Song pack, worth £20, for the discounted price of £8.10.

All parents, grandparents and carers are welcome and are encouraged to book to avoid disappointment by calling 01388 761634.

Young people at King James I Academy have been treated to a ‘Sportsability’ taster session courtesy of Durham County Leisure’s Sportsability Team, who specialise in providing fun activities for adults and young people with a disability.

Students were introduced to just a few of the sporting activities on offer including Boccia, New Age Kurling and Seated Volleyball, which not only proved extremely popular but also revealed some previously undiscovered sporting talent.

These activities, and others such as Tri-golf, Kwik-Cricket, Short Tennis, Fencing, Dance and Trampoline, will all be available at a new Sportsability Club, which will be run by Durham County Leisure (DCL) and held at King James.

The DCL Team initially approached the Academy as they were looking for an easily-accessible venue for their new Sportsability Club in the Bishop Auckland area. The central location, combined with excellent disability facilities, made King James the perfect choice for local residents and, after meeting some of the students, they kindly organised the much-enjoyed afternoon session.

The Sportsability Club will run for a trial period on Thursdays from 4pm-5pm, for all young people from 5-19 years-old with a disability and, if successful, it will become permanent.

Bishop Auckland Town Team is appealing to the town’s patriotic loyalty and requesting that companies, businesses and organisations support the initiative of sponsoring a pennant on Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland.

The PVC pennants will be attached to 17 of the lamp post pillars that adorn Newgate Street and will fly from May until October.

The pennants will have the name of the sponsor and a Union Jack emblem to embrace the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the celebration of the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Torch will be passing through Bishop Auckland on Sunday 17th June 2012, when a schedule of entertainment and fun is planned.

The torch will travel the entire length of Newgate Street, over the Station Bridge to Cockton Hill and will turn at the traffic lights to St. Andrew’s Road and proceed towards South Church.

“This is indeed a once in a lifetime celebration, when the eyes of the nation will be watching,” said a Town Team spokesperson.

Local students will be taking part in a driving-themed road show next week aimed at helping them to improve their driving skills.

The event is aimed at encouraging young people to participate in Durham County Council’s young driver training programme, EXCELerate.

From Monday 30th April until Friday 4th May, students at Bishop Auckland College will benefit from presentations from Durham County Council’s road safety team and the Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue team, as well as being given the opportunity to test their driving skills on a state-of-the-art driving simulator.

Alan Kennedy, road safety section manager at Durham County Council said: “There are more young drivers involved in serious and fatal crashes in County Durham than in any other age group. We are really keen on encouraging students to join our EXCELerate programme to help keep them safer on the roads.”

The programme, aimed at people aged 15 to 25, provides intervention at key stages of a young person’s driving career, aiming to improve driving standards and develop safer drivers.

For further information on the EXELerate programme, or for a free copy of the ‘Good egg guide for parents of new drivers’, contact Alan Kennedy on 0191 383 3769.
